Spiritual Thoughts

Why believe in the Lord?

The other day I had the chance to spend sometime with a man who said he did not believe in heaven or hell. He stated that when he dies all he is will wink out and, since that is the case he saw no reason to believe in God or Jesus or concepts like heaven or hell.

To be honest his openness on the issue startled and intrigued me. I was moved to ask him several questions and to my surprise make a statement that went something like this.

What if you are wrong? What if there is a Heaven and Hell. What if when you die instead of winking out you actually live on in one of these realms. What will you say to yourself at that point? Boy, I wish I had believed. If as you say we simply wink out, then will having believed hurt you in anyway? Will you have lost anything? It doesn’t seem like it will matter at all.

If you don’t wink out and there is a God and Lord who have prepared a place for you, then believing could be the greatest gift you give yourself. I know it sounds selfish, but why would you want to pass up the opportunity of an awesome eternity?

God has given us free will to make the choice to be with him or not. I respect that freedom. I for one think that at a very basic thought level believing in God and Jesus is a much easier path. If I am right I have everything to gain. If I am wrong, I haven’t lost a thing because there is as you say nothing there to loose.

He looked at me somewhat puzzled and simply said, I disagree.

I walked away and thought, where did that come from and did I hear a chink in his armor of self Godhead break?

What are you doing with the freedom God has given you? Are you creating armor for your own personal Godhead or are you leaving yourself vulnerable so the Lord can be your savior?
