What Can The New Year Mean To Me As A Christian
At some point in our lives we have probably made a new years resolution. It may have been to eat less, give up smoking or even exercise more, all very good resolutions.
As I find myself preparing to celebrate my 50th year on this planet, I can’t help but wonder if the kind of resolutions I have made in the past will really make a substantial difference in my future. I am in good health now and have been given many gifts. Gifts that often find themselves under utilized or directed at personal goals. I can’t help but ask myself, why did God give me these gifts?
I like to think of myself as a good person, I like to believe that I am very likable. I like to think that others can feel comfortable reaching out to me. I really do like to think these thoughts. Yet, if I am going to be honest, when I look back from this perch of almost 50 years. I see that most people find me unapproachable. Many think I can’t understand or relate to them. Many people don’t think I care for others and do very little to help. I suppose there are varied reasons for why I have yet to correct the flaws in my character that put me at such a disadvantage with others.
This brings me to my point. When I consider my future on this planet and hopefully one day in heaven, there are only certain things I can carry with me. Those things are my memories and my feelings. My resolution is to strive to share the greatest gift that God gave me, his love. If between now and the time I am called, I am able to let the love and care that has been infused in me by our creator, flow to those I am with, touch and interact with, then I will be truly blessed.
I believe that Jesus showed us something very special when he became man. I believe he went out of his way to model a behavior we all could follow. Often he made a point of putting emphasis on the little things that can easily go unnoticed.
I believe he was telling us, that every moment is sacred and that God’s love is just as present in a welcoming embrace or a patient ear as when he healed the sick. I encourage you to join me in making your own resolution. I encourage you to look at the gifts God has given you and ask why do I have these gifts and how do I use them.
I encourage you to consider your future on this earth and your future in heaven.
